Picking a word of the year can be a powerful thing. It requires you to look over your past year and decide how you want to describe the next one. What will you leave behind? What will you improve on?

A Defining Word

Last year I had a phrase, not just a word. Out of my comfort zone. I wanted to do things that were hard for me, but would make a difference in my life. This meant getting out of my comfort zone. This time last year, I was signing up for things that excited, but terrified me.

I went on a blogging retreat, attended a child care business summit and put myself out on my blogs. Because of this, I grew as a person and a business owner. My word (or phrase) was my inspiration all year for how I ran my businesses, changes I made in relationships and things I wanted to be different in my life.

My Word of the Year

Every ones word is going to be different. Some people with have the same word, but different directions they are going.

My word of the year is Intentional. I want to “live on purpose”. This means making changes to things I buy, plans I make or things I add to my life. I don’t want to waste money on buying this that have no purpose. Honestly, I am really bad about this. I buy books, games, clothes, tools, ect with great intentions, but no plan.

Living with purpose and intentionally means have and following a plan with a purposeful outcome. If something I want doesn’t work towards that, then I don’t need it in my life.

Having a life that is lived intentionally means that I design and control my life and the outcomes. How powerful is that?

Surround Yourself with the Word

Your word of the year should be your mantra, what you are known for. It should be everywhere! I recently purchased a “My Intent” kit to use with my staff at my child care center. This kit allows you to hammer your word on a bracelet or necklace. Then you have your word with you every where you go.

I am also planning to make a wooden sign to hang somewhere in my house and one for my office. I even ordered a traveler’s notebook with “intentional” and the definition on it. This will allow me to journal about my progress of following my goals.

Choosing YOUR Word of the Year

What will be YOUR word of the year. How do you want to define this new decade we are entering into? Determine what word you want to shape your coming year and focus on it.

Stay tuned for a future post on Vision Boards and incorporating your Word of the Year into it!
